The Monstera deliciosa , also known as the Swiss cheese plant , is an iconic houseplant known for its impressive, large leaves with characteristic holes and incisions. This plant is not only an eye-catcher, but also relatively easy to care for, making it a favorite for many plant lovers.
π Light & Location
- Place the Monstera in a light spot with indirect sunlight .
- Direct sunlight can burn the leaves, so make sure the plant does not get bright sunlight, especially in the afternoon.
- The plant can also be placed in partial shade, but will then grow more slowly and have fewer cuts in the leaves.
π¦ Watering
- The Monstera likes regular watering , but the soil should be allowed to dry out between waterings .
- In summer it needs more water, about 1-2 times a week , depending on temperature and humidity. In winter less, about 1 time every 10-14 days .
- Make sure the pot is well-draining and that water does not remain in the pot, as this can lead to root rot.
π¨ Humidity
- Monsteras like medium to high humidity (between 60-80%).
- They can be grown in normal living rooms, but if the air is too dry, the leaves can turn brown around the edges. A humidifier or occasional misting can help, especially in winter.
π± Nutrition
- During the growing season (spring and summer) you can feed the Monstera every 2-3 weeks with a liquid houseplant food.
- In autumn and winter the plant does not need extra nutrition because it is dormant.
πΏ Pruning & Repotting
- Pruning long branches can help keep the plant compact and promote growth. Also remove dead or damaged leaves.
- Repot every 2-3 years or when the roots grow out of the pot. Use a well-draining potting soil, such as a mix of potting soil, perlite and bark.
- Monsteras are climbing plants , so you can use a moss pole or trellis to help the plant grow upwards. This will help support its natural growth and will create larger leaves with more incisions.
π± Cuttings
- Monsteras are easy to propagate by cuttings. Cut off a healthy branch with an aerial root and place it in water or directly in moist soil.
- Within a few weeks roots will appear, after which you can place the cutting in a new pot.
π‘οΈ Diseases & Pests
- Pests: Monsteras can suffer from aphids , spider mites and mealybugs , especially in too dry air. Regularly inspect the underside of the leaves.
- Brown or yellow leaves? This could indicate too much water, poor drainage, or insufficient light.
- Holes in the leaves: These often occur as the plant grows, but they can also occur due to damage, especially in young plants.
With the right care, the Monstera deliciosa is a fantastic plant that will quickly grow into a beautiful, tropical addition to your home! πΏπ±
