Croton – Care & Tips 🌿🌈

The Croton (Codiaeum variegatum) is a striking houseplant known for its brightly colored leaves . This plant has leaf colors ranging from green, yellow, orange, red and purple, which gives it an exotic appearance. Crotons can be a bit demanding, but with the right care it will become a beautiful addition to your interior.

🌞 Light & Location

βœ” Bright indirect light is ideal. Crotons need a lot of light to maintain their bright colors .
βœ” Can tolerate some direct sunlight, but too much may burn the leaves.
βœ” Avoid shade – a spot with little light can cause the plant to wilt.
βœ” Do not place the plant in a draughty place or near a heater.

πŸ’¦ Watering

βœ” Water the plant regularly , but make sure that the soil is not constantly too wet.
βœ” Water 2-3 times a week in summer , and less in winter (about once a week).
βœ” Use rainwater or filtered water to prevent limescale build-up on the leaves.
βœ” Leaves wilting or curling? β†’ Too little water.
βœ” Yellow leaves or rotten roots? β†’ Too much water.

πŸ’¨ Humidity

βœ” High humidity (50-60%) is important for the Croton.
βœ” Spray the leaves regularly to prevent dry leaf tips.
βœ” Place the plant on a tray with water and pebbles or use a humidifier to increase the humidity.
βœ” Dry air can lead to brown edges on the leaves.

🌱 Nutrition

βœ” Give liquid houseplant food every 2 weeks in spring and summer .
βœ” In autumn and winter the Croton does not need extra nutrition.
βœ” Be careful not to over-fertilize as this can damage the roots.

🌿 Pruning & Repotting

βœ” Prune away dead or damaged leaves to keep the plant healthy.
βœ” Repot the Croton every 1-2 years, preferably in spring , to give it room to grow.
βœ” Use an airy potting soil with good drainage, such as a mix with perlite.

πŸ›‘οΈ Diseases & Pests

βœ” Crotons are susceptible to spider mites, aphids and mealybugs , especially in low humidity.
βœ” Brown leaf tips can be caused by dry air or too much fertilizer .
βœ” Yellow leaves? β†’ This could indicate too much or too little water or a lack of light.
